It's so akward trying to start things. How does one go about it? Or better yet, how does one NOT go about it?
Sir Writes A Lot listed ten ways not to start a story:
1.) Waking up
2.) Weather or describing the landscape
3.) Cliches (Once upon a time, etc)
4.) Description of the town or kingdom
5.) Detailed character descriptions
6.) Prologues
7.) Addressing the reader directly
8.) Telling your reader your story is a work of fiction
9.) An outlandish, shocking, zany hooker
AND
10.) things your reader does not understand......
Personally, I think that maybe the BEST way to start a story is with an introduction. Not a "My life is an enigma" introduction but an introduction like when you meet someone.
